Data recovery on a hard drive: Questions

We answer here the questions most frequently asked by customers about hard disk data recovery.

Can I try by myself to recover my data ?

If your data are vital or important, We strongly advise you not to try by yourself. It is no coincidence that the majority of our clients are IT services firms. To each his specialty: the scientists themselves know their limits ; they also lack the infrastructure or all the tools necessary to recover the hard disk, system RAID or other magnetic supports (see particulary 'clean room' below). As in medicine, there are IT generalists and specialists. At Datex, we are specialists and our speciality is data recovery since more of twenty years

Why is it risky to try self-recovery drive ?

If the user of maintainers unskilled intervene prior to the hard disk and try by themselves a data recovery, the success rate drop dramatically : he spends 85% to 15% on average, as well as a physical breakdown than a software problem, a formatting or a data erasure :

In the case of a hardware failure : It is frequently possible to recover tha hard drive next to a beginning of crash disk, what means when the hard drive crash is not complete. In this case, the problem is that the user often try by himself to recover his hard drive and only aggravate the crash disk (using a data recovery software or changing the electronic card for example). Indeed, using a software on a physically damaged hard drive deteriorate it even more, because operating read head strip more and more intern platters of the hard drive. Similarly, change or repair the electronic card can actually make the hard disk reboot, but head blocks poorly positionned continue to strip the platters and make the data recovery more difficult or partial, or impossible. That's why at Datex we conduct a comprehensive diagnosis in clean room before processing the hard disk recovery.

In the case of a software problem, a formatting or a data erasure :
In this case too, a prior recovery makes the hard drive much more random. Many data recovery software are available online or in Informatics stores. Theses softwares are generally effective but mais the question is which one to choose depending on the problem : there are several possible causes of data erasure and using these softwares without a prior diagnosis risk to corrupt the data.

What about the period for recovery process ?

It is in our interest to recover the hard drive as quickly as possible because we are paid only once the recovery disk is done . The period, however, depends on various factors, essentially of the type of support (or the type of hard drive) and the type of problem or failure (hardware or software). Generally, in the case of a formatting or erasure of data, data recovery lasts from 1 to 3 days ; in the case of a physical failure, the diagnosis takes 1 to 3 days, then the recovery disk takes itself 2 days to a week in the section "Data recovery process "

How much cost a data recovery ?

We wish to satisfy you the best while recovering your data. A key element of the service is of course the price. Despite of the cost of regular maintenance of our infrastructure, the renewal of our tools, spare parts not to mention labor specialist and highly qualified, we we are doing our best to maintain reasonable prices, price, according to our customers, "are well below the value of our data". Because the question is there: the value of your data.

Prices necessarily depend on various parameters : type of failure, type of support, type of hard drive, O/S, capacity, time spend on the hard drive, etc. To give you an order of magnitude, prices remain within a range of 500 to 2000 euros for a hard disk, and from 1500 to 5000 euros for RAID system. Please contact us by phone and you will be informed specifically whichever your case. If you are interested in retrieving data in our laboratories, you will discover the steps in the section "Data recovery process"

We want to be as clear and transparent as possible. Also, once we have identified the problem in broad terms by phone, we will send you a contract stipulating a price range which corresponds to your case. You will have no bad surprise at receiving the invoice.

Why a clean room to repair or recover a hard drive ?

Whatever the brand, the hard drive is manufactured in a sterile enclosure ; it is also protected by warranty stickers to prevent opening. A hard disk is very sensitive to dust and moisture : inside the hard drive, the distance between the read heads and magnetic platters is well below the size of a particle of smoke or a fingerprint! So you can easily imagine the damage caused by the opening of a hard disk in the air.

At a repair or a recovery disc drive following a physical failure (mechanical or electronic), the hard drive must be opened in a totally clean environment. The class 100 is required, what means a maximum of 100 dust particles larger than 0.5 µm per cubic foot of air. To avoid any risk, diagnosis and recovery process of hard drive are done in clean room. In order to address urgently a large volume of hard disks, Datex has several clean rooms of class-100.

Is it always possible to recover a hard drive ?

In the case of a quick formatting of the hard disk or erasure of data, the recovery rate is near 100%. However, the recovery disk is not possible in the case of a rewriting of data, when data are written and stored on previous data.

The recovery of the hard disk is not possible in case of total destruction of the hard disk, what means when the internal magnetic platters are completely crashed ; in this case, Magnetic information itself is destroyed and thus unrecoverable. This often happens when the hard drive stops abruptly at a higher voltage or a power outage - or at a fall of the computer : the read heads move and then suddenly hit the platters. This is called a disk crash - or hard disk crash (note : the expression "disk crash" is now popular and is often define a single HDD failure).

Warning : It is often possible to recover the hard disk after a beginning of a crash disk, when the hard drive crash is not complete. In this case, the prior problem is that the user often try by himself to recover the hard drive and only aggravate the crash disk (using a data recovery softwareen or changing the electronic card for exemple). Indeed, using a software on a physically damaged hard drive deteriorate it even more, because operating read head strip more and more intern platters of the hard drive. Similarly, change or repair the electronic card can actually make the hard disk reboot, but head blocks poorly positionned continue to strip the platters and make the data recovery more difficult or partial, or impossible That's why at Datex we conduct a comprehensive diagnosis in clean room before processing the hard disk recovery.

If your data are important, do not try by yourself to recover your hard drive. You will increase your own chances of success by sending us your hard disk directly.

Is the warranty of my hard drive preserved following the repair or data recovery ?

Yes, a hard disk data recoverywith Datex allow you to preserve the hard drive warranty, even if this one is opened in clean-room. Following brand allows Datex to preserve your warranty : IBM, Maxtor, Quantum, Seagate, Western Digital WDC - as well as HP Hewlett Packard hard drives manufactured by manufacturers above.

Warning : We can not maintain the warranty of your hard disk if it has previously been opened or that the warranty stickers were removed by the user or third-maintainers.
